Rufus Littlejohn was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia. He is the youngest of nine children born to Izetta Littlejohn and the late Daniel Littlejohn.
As with many children of large families, Rufus was initially educated by older siblings and later in the City Public Schools. His fondest memories are of teachers such as, Mrs. Mathews and Mrs. Wright who encouraged independent thinking.
At 10 years old Rufus got involved in organized football as an excuse to get out of the house. In his early teen years, football and baseball were important. At age 16, he played on the Virginia State Championship Football Team, which was the subject of the Disney motion picture “Remember the Titans”. That difficult year taught the value of friendship and determination.
Following high school, Rufus attended West Chester University in Pennsylvania where he worked two jobs while playing football. College provided opportunities for leadership in student life, which included serving as President of the Black Student Union. After graduating with an Education Degree in American History, Rufus returned to Alexandria where he met Betty Adams, began a career in Corporate Sales and Marketing, and completed a Graduate Degree in Business and Public Administration from Southeastern University in Washington, D.C. During this time Rufus indulged a long time interest by getting a Private Pilot License.
Seeking greater personal and professional challenges, Rufus moved to Richmond, Virginia where he was one of the top sales performers for a Fortune 500 company. After five years, Rufus returned to Northern Virginia married Betty, owned and managed a business and re-entered corporate sales.
Now Rufus and Betty are happy enjoying pre-retirement, investing in real estate, and traveling. Rufus serves as Vice-president of the ’71 Original Titans Foundation, which was formed by his High School teammates to provide College scholarships to T.C. Williams High School students. They live in Alexandria, Virginia.
