Michael F. Lynch
(Mike) was born on March 16, 1955 in Plattsburgh, New York.
He was the third child of Pat and Louise Lynch, who would eventually
raise eight children.
After moving
several times while he was a child, Mike’s family settled
in Annandale, Virginia in the mid 1960s. Mike attended Thomas
Jefferson High School in Fairfax County until the summer of 1971,
when the family moved to Alexandria.
In August, 1971,
Pat Lynch took his son to T.C. Williams High School to enroll
him in school and register him for the Titans football team.
Both were dismayed to learn that “the team had already
left for football camp” and “it’s an extremely
large squad” and “he’d be at an awful disadvantage”
if Mike joined the program after the camp. Still, Mike was determined
to play and earned a spot on the ’71 and ’72 T.C. Williams
teams.
After graduation,
Mike attended the University of Maryland. In 1974, he joined
the Maryland football program as a “walk-on” and played
on the scout team for 1½ seasons before an injury ended
his football days.
Mike graduated
from Maryland with a Bachelors Degree in Law Enforcement in 1978,
and became a University of Maryland Police officer. In 1982,
he was recruited to the Charles County (MD) Sheriff’s Department,
and in 1984, he relocated to the Baltimore County (MD) Police
Department where he eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant.
While in Baltimore
County, Mike continued his education, earning a Masters Degree
in Legal Studies at the University of Baltimore (1992) and a
second Masters Degree in Applied Behavioral Science at Johns
Hopkins University (1997).
Mike married
Rosemary Bishop of Baltimore in 1991, and immediately started
a family. Mike and Rosemary now have four daughters - Chelsea,
Courtney, Molly and Megan - all born in Baltimore.
In 1999, Mike
retired from the Baltimore County Police Department and accepted
a position as Chief of Police at George Mason University Police
Department, serving three campuses in Northern Virginia. He
plans to work toward a Ph.D. while at Mason.
Mike and his
family live in Manassas, Virginia.
